Choosing Starting Hands

Choosing Starting Hands

One of the biggest mistakes at the poker table is playing too many starting hands.
A bad player rarely selects his starting hands and folding too few trouble hands.
The first consequence is that he makes a bad investment preflop.
The second consequence is that he’s getting in big trouble after the flop, even if he hits it somehow. In this strategy article take a look at the reasons why you should select your starting hands:

Problems before the flop

This is not the biggest problem with playing too many hands.
Indeed some poker professionals play too many hands but have success with this strategy.
The difference is that they know how to play them properly.
Let’s assume that a tight player raises before the flop in early position.
Our bad player is sitting in late positon, holding A7, everybody folds to him and he makes the call. That’s a very bad call!
There’s no single hand A7 is a favorit against.
Either it’s dominated by AK, AJ and so on or the raiser simply has an overpair with KK to TT.
Only one result after the flop is a good one: the raiser hits top pair or has an overpair to the flop and the bad player happens to flop two pair or trips.
A flop like A72 is a dream for him if his opponent has AK. But those are very rare cases.

Problems after the flop

As everybody knows usually most of the money moves in after the flop in No-Limit Hold’em.
The amount invested preflop is very small compared to the investments after the flop.
And that’s the reason why mistakes after the flop are so expensive!
Because if you get involved with a weak hand it’s hard to get away with it.
Let’s assume our bad player holds AT and calls a raise before the flop.
The flop is A44 and seemingly not a bad one.
His opponent makes a continuation bet, checks on the turn and makes another bet on the river.
Our bad player calls all those bets and loses a big pot against AQ.
A pretty small mistake before the flop costs him a lot of money.
A loss that could have been avoided if he was more selective with his starting hands.

Those are the two most important reasons for starting hand selection and show how important it is to decide which hands to play.
